Attention: apart from Portogruaro, you reach the mills through country roads that are sometimes narrow, sometimes difficult. In one case even impossible to travel for a camper or a mobile home: it is via Bassa, in the stretch that goes from San Nicolò (Portogruaro) to the center of Portovecchio. The reason; the passage under the highway, too low and too narrow for campers or vans. Other paths must be chosen. Perhaps there are also other impossible roads. Never be obstinate; when needed, it is better to park the camper where you can do it safely and reach the goal by bicycle or on foot.

PORTOGRUARO wheels in motion for 800 years

Unlike the other three mills on the Lemene river, namely Stalis, Boldara and Portovecchio, located in the countryside or in small hamlets, those of Portograuro are located in the center of the largest town that the river meets. Portogruaro (simply said Porto, in Venetian language, and Puart in Friulano) has almost 25,000 inhabitants. The river enters from the north, flows by the cathedral and the municipality (the mills are here, in the heart of the town) and exits to the south, to reach the town of Concordia Sagittaria and the Adriatic sea.

Two wheels are left, both in motion. For those who watch from the bridge, they are preceded by a large an anchor placed on the ground at the apex of a small island; as the name implies, Portogruaro was a docking point for loading and unloading goods).

Portogruaro (Italia) scultura raffigurante grù, simbolo della città

The symbol of the towns are two cranes, painted on the coat of arms and placed (the work is from 1928) above the well of a fountain next to the Town Hall, a stone's throw from the river.
The city center is small and beautiful. Old arcades, narrow streets, shops and clubs that are sometimes minimal but always well-kept.

Portogruaro (Italia): portici in centro

While strolling downtown, I heard a song caming from the audio system of a tavern. A song that I hadn't heard for quite a while. A comparison of voices that I love. It tells, with some small variations, a story that, many years ago, a person told me. I absorbed the music, almost holding my breath, for four minutes, until the last notes faded away. I wander what passers by may have thought, seeing me standing in the middle of the street (pedestrian area), camera in hand, motionless.

If you too want to listen to this music, the song is (also) here:
